Tips for Fountain Pen Beginners: Starting Your New Year with a Beautiful Hobby

As the old year comes to an end and we welcome the new year with open arms, it's the perfect time to reflect and set new goals for ourselves. What better way to start the new year than by picking up a new hobby or sharpening our existing skills? If you're someone who loves writing and is intrigued by the art of calligraphy, then this blog post is just for you. We will be sharing some tips on how to make the most of your fountain pen.

Fountain pens have been around for centuries, and their popularity in the world of calligraphy and writing has only grown over the years. It's no surprise that they have stood the test of time, thanks to their elegant design and smooth writing experience. But for beginners, using a fountain pen can be quite intimidating. Don't worry; with a little bit of practice and these tips, you'll be able to master the art of writing with a fountain pen in no time.

We have always told customers, if they stick with using a fountain pen for a couple of weeks, they will never want to write with any other type of pen again.

#1 - Practice Regularly

The first thing to keep in mind when using a fountain pen is to practice regularly. Like any other skill, writing with a fountain pen requires constant practice to improve and perfect. Don't be discouraged if your writing doesn't look perfect in the beginning. Remember, even the most skilled calligraphers were once beginners.

#2 - Get a Grip

When it comes to using a fountain pen, the way you hold it plays a crucial role in the outcome of your writing. The proper way to hold a fountain pen is to grip it lightly with your thumb and index finger, with the pen resting on your middle finger. Make sure your grip is not too tight as it may affect the smooth flow of ink. Experiment with different grips to find the one that works best for you and always remember to keep your wrist stable.

#3 - Keep it Clean

Another important tip is to clean your fountain pen regularly. Unlike regular pens, fountain pens require a bit of maintenance to ensure they work smoothly. We recommend following our fountain pen care instructions and cleaning your fountain pen every few weeks to ensure it writes properly. You can also wipe excess ink off of the nib and feed when you are done using it. This will prevent your pen from clogging and ensure a smooth writing experience every time.

#4 - Choosing Ink and Paper

In addition to these tips, it's also crucial to use high-quality ink and paper when writing with a fountain pen. The quality of your writing greatly depends on the ink and paper you use. High-quality ink will produce vibrant and long-lasting colors while good quality paper will prevent any feathering or bleeding of ink.

#5 - It's okay to get help!

Calligraphy is defined as the art of creating decorative writing with a pen or brush. Once you are comfortable with a fountain pen, find some guides / books on calligraphy. There are a lot of resources available to teach someone the art of calligraphy. Once again, it takes time to become proficient in the art of calligraphy. With that said, your journey through the world of pens and calligraphy will lead you to creating beautiful works of art. You may find yourself creating cards for special occasions, writing letters, or just making notes that you would never have thought of doing.

As we enter the new year, let's make an effort to try new things and improve our existing skills. So why not invest in a beautiful fountain pen and practice the art of calligraphy? Remember to practice regularly, hold your pen correctly, and keep it clean to achieve beautiful writing. Happy writing and Happy New Year!
