The Review: Conklin Duragraph
If you’re looking for a reliable, no-nonsense tool for daily writing, the Conklin Duragraph is a solid contender. After spending two weeks using this pen daily with a variety of inks, my core impression is that it’s a true "workhorse." It’s lightweight and comfortable enough to use for extended writing sessions at work or home, and the build quality feels dependable. It isn't trying to be overly flashy; it’s just a solid, well-built pen that gets the job done. One interesting bit—it features a screw-on cap, but it actually presses on to post. While posting adds a little weight to the back, it stays very comfortable and balanced if you prefer writing with the cap off.
The writing experience is where this pen really shows its personality. Both the fine and medium stainless steel #6 JoWo nibs are incredibly smooth, but keep in mind that they run a bit wide. To my eye, the fine nib writes more like a medium, and the medium feels almost like a broad. Because the Duragraph is on the "wet" side, it puts down a generous amount of ink. This makes it a fantastic choice for those shimmer and sheen inks we all love, as it really brings those colors to life. Interestingly, I even noticed some great shading when using the fine nib on higher-quality paper like Clairefontaine. In regards to ink flow, if you are a writer that enjoys dryer pens that do not put down a lot of ink, this may not be the pen for you. The increased amount of ink this pen puts down does increase drying times of most inks.
Now, every workhorse has its quirks. The main thing to watch for with the Duragraph is a tendency for "hard starts," particularly on lower-quality paper. If the pen sits for a few minutes, you might find it misses that very first stroke of a letter. However, I didn’t run into this nearly as much on better paper. My advice? Give the pen a good initial cleaning to clear out any manufacturing debris, and spend a little time finding the right ink-and-paper pairing. Since the entire nib section disassembles so easily, maintenance and cleaning are a breeze. Once you find that "sweet spot" combination, this pen is a fantastic, high-value tool for any collection.
To bring this fountain pen review to life, I’ve included a series of photographs taken of the pen in various lighting conditions, as well as a document that i wrote with the pen while completing the review. You are seeing my authentic comments penned using the pen itself, offering a direct glimpse into the personality of the pen. These snapshots serve as part of the pen'snarrative—capturing its strengths, quirks, and overall impression.
**Please note that our reviews may differ significantly from what you typically see from other individuals or companies. This is more than just a review—it's an pen test conducted for both our benefit and yours. We use each pen for multiple weeks to gather as much information as possible. During this time, we test pens with a range of inks, multiple writing conditions and writing styles.
This isn’t a “sit down, open a box, and write a review in 15 minutes” kind of approach. Instead, we aim to offer insights based on real-world tests and extended daily use. Keep in mind, ink matters, and your pen may vary from this review based on how you use it!
