What is the difference between paper for fountain pens and paper for calligraphy?

While there is some overlap, the two are optimized for different uses:

Fountain Pen Paper: This paper is tailored for everyday writing and journaling. It is crafted to minimize feathering, ghosting, and bleed-through even during prolonged writing sessions. The finish is generally very smooth—with just enough coating to control ink without slowing down the drying time excessively. This balance supports consistent ink flow and clean line work ideal for detailed note‑taking and correspondence.

Calligraphy Paper: Calligraphy projects often demand a paper that can handle heavier ink deposits and more dynamic strokes. Calligraphy paper may be slightly textured to allow for expressive strokes or have a specific finish to enhance the visual impact of bold lines and flourishes. In addition, calligraphy papers are sometimes thicker to prevent bleed‑through when using dip pens, brush pens, or other specialized tools. This added texture or finish can enrich artistic expression, though it might not deliver the same crisp line quality as fountain pen paper when used with a fine nib.

Both types aim to accentuate the ink’s visual qualities but are calibrated to the specifics of their use.
