How does paper texture affect ink performance and line quality?

The paper’s texture dictates how ink is delivered and dried on its surface:

Smooth Texture: A highly smooth paper keeps ink on the surface for longer, yielding sharp, defined lines and minimal feathering. However, the ink may take longer to dry because it isn’t rapidly absorbed into the paper fibers .

Slight Texture (Hot-Pressed Papers): Lightly textured paper offers a compromise—providing enough grip for the nib while still allowing ink to flow smoothly and dry at a moderate pace. This is common in many fountain pen notebooks and high‑quality calligraphy pads.

Heavily Textured (Cold‑Pressed Papers): More pronounced textures can lead to uneven ink deposition. The ink might settle unevenly, causing variations in line thickness or apparent “bleeding” along the texture. For artists, this may be desirable for creating certain effects, but it can be problematic if clean and consistent letterforms are required.

Ultimately, the choice of texture depends on the intended use—whether the goal is professional everyday writing or creative, expressive design work.
