Can I use regular printer paper for fountain pen or calligraphy applications?

The GSM (grams per square meter) is a crucial indicator of a paper’s thickness and durability:

Lower GSM Papers (around 70–80 GSM): These papers are generally thinner and, while economical for everyday use, can be more prone to feathering, bleed‑through, and ink smudging—especially when using very wet fountain pen inks.

Higher GSM Papers (80–100 GSM and above): Heavier papers tend to be sturdier and less absorbent. They offer better resistance against bleed‑through and usually provide a more satisfying writing experience because the ink sits neatly on the surface. However, the optimal GSM also depends on the paper’s formulation; some specially engineered fountain pen papers (like Tomoe River, which is quite light in GSM but treated for low absorbency) can defy convention 4.

Balance: It’s not solely the GSM but also the paper’s coating and texture that dictate performance. Tailored papers balance weight with a smooth finish and controlled absorption, ensuring crisp, clear lines.

Choosing the right GSM contributes significantly to the tactile feel, print quality, and overall durability of your writing surface.
